With Covid restrictions easing, and the overwhelming positive feedback regarding the intrastate carnival held in 2022, BWA will updating the current format of the Southern Cross Challenge (SCC) for the upcoming 2023 high performance calendar.

As travelling interstate is now an option, Basketball WA will select 4 touring teams to participate in the Southern Cross Challenge Tournament held in Victoria and 8 teams selected to participate in the newly named High-Performance Development Carnival (HPDC)

The SCC touring teams will be made up of athletes from both country and metro programs while the HPDC teams will have separate metro and country representative teams in each age group

TEAM SELECTION PROCESS

After completion of the trials for each group, the SCC head coach, in consultation with BWA and the Metro and Country coaches for their respective age group, will select the 10 athletes that will travel to the SCC tournament.

Once the SCC teams have been selected, the Metro and Country coaches will select their teams from their remaining pool of eligible players and commence their preparation training.

As this is a development program, athletes will be selected on a range of factors including:

  • Current skill and ability
  • Future potential
  • Size and athleticism relative to future basketball position
  • Athlete development over the trial period
  • Attitude
  • Ability to implement teaching points from the trials

Both the HPDC Country and the SCC teams will use a camp format set by BWA for their preparation while the HPDC Metro coaches will schedule their training sessions.
