The Hawks welcome veteran Seva Chan into the NBL1 West Program

Seva Chan has joined the Men’s NBL1 West program this season. Previously at the Cougars where he won a championship in 2012, Seva has played over 250+ SBL/NBL1 games and comes to the Hawks with plenty of experience. A cool operator under pressure, Seva is one of the league’s best point guards, highlighted by his 2022 NBL1 Golden Hands award.

Seva discussed his move , ” Obviously leaving the Cougars is always a tough decision as I spent my whole juniors and have played over 250 NBL1 games there with lifelong mates and connections on the team and around the club.  That being said, I had one of my best years playing under Coops when he was at Cougars. Damo was assistant at Cougs at the time and I was able to have discussions with him around where I wanted to see myself play and the kind of system and style that I thought my game would fit the best”.

I am great mates with the Phillips brothers Luke and Keegan as well so that definitely was a big factor with my decision to join the Hawks. Having that history of playing with them before and knowing there are established shooters at the Hawks with guys like Leary, Kyiah and Cooper and Damo’s vision of the style of imports to arrive influenced my decision to join and be a part of the Hawks”.

Head Coach Damian Barr is excited to have Seva on board. ” Seva is an elite on ball defender, an elite passer but also has the ability to get to the rim and knock down big shots. His on court leadership will add a steadying hand to what is a young Hawks team, however his character and temperament off court is already having a positive impact on those around him. Working with our core group of guards , and members of our leadership group, AJ, Leary and Hamilton and already having an on and off court relationship with the Phillips brothers we can already see the impact of the addition of Seva both on and off court with our group”.

Seva is Looking forward to playing in a new system and style, make a push for playoffs and hopefully win a championship! Seva believes his strengths are finding the right guys the ball in the best spots, reading the flow of the game, playing out of the drive and on balls and bringing solid defence. Seva has settled into the team and with a few weeks under his belt had the following to say “So far I am really enjoying it! The guys are really great, everyone has been super nice and welcoming. We went on a team trip to Albany and that helped with a bit of team bonding and getting to know everyone. Training has been great and the intensity has been there so I’m excited to see what it looks like playing against other teams”

See Seva and the rest of the Hawks in action this season. The season opener is Friday April 4th against the Lakeside Lightning at Bendat. Women Tip off at 6.30pm and the Men at 8.30pm.
